Slug:Social Media Advantages

This revolutionary invention we call social media is admirable for its ability to connect people  from around the world for many reasons despite its constant critique for giving us millennials MILLENNIALS, NOT US MILLENNIALS; AVOID USING FIRST-PERSON REFERENCES OUTSIDE OF QUOTES, PER AP STYLE the excuse for our inability to communicate person to person.

Justin Washington, an expert in media analysis, said that 75% PERCENT IS SPELLED OUT INSTEAD OF % SYMBOL, PER AP STYLE of teens in the United States use the internet for more reasons other than socializing and that it allows for them to become individuals Washington said. ONLY ONE ATTRIBUTION NEEDED IN ANY PARAGRAPH WHERE THERE IS ONLY ONE SOURCE

Students from high school to college all agree that some of their experiences and opportunities  would not have happened if it was not for their Instagram,Twitter, or Facebook accounts.

According to Nia Shumake ,a University of Michigan senior studying communications, her Instagram account landed her an internship at a big time fashion company in New York City last summer.

“I was sent a direct message from the social media lead advisor saying that she liked my fashion posts and wanted to know if I would be interested in interning at her fashion company by the name of Harlem Fashion Row that summer and of course I went,” said Shumake.

Researchers in the A, INSTEAD OF THE study, titled the Digital Youth Project found that the constant communication that social networking provides has encouraging and useful skills. They found that social media is creating new opportunities for young people to deal with social norms, explore interests, and work on new forms of self-expression.

MSU junior Keire Wellington said that before she joined Twitter she would never voiced her opinion on controversial topics but now she has the confidence to say how she feels because of how vocal everyone already are on Twitter.

“People on Twitter are ruthless and will tell you whatever comes to their minds whether it sounds crazy or not.It kind of makes me feel like if they can be honest amongst strangers then why can't I,” said Wellington.

Social media is also known for its ability to make people feel connected even if they do not see one another that often.

Wellington also said that social media helps friendships because you can see what your friend is doing even if you all live far apart. She said that its almost like you get to stay apart of their life by seeing their posts everyday.

Alexis Featherstone, junior at Jackson State University studying advertising, said that she gets the most business for her cleaning service through her Facebook account.

“Whenever I am home on break, I usually make a status saying that my cleaning service is up and running and I get tons of messages from people asking if I can come to clean their offices, parents homes, or grandparents homes. I make about $1200 from those clients,” said Featherstone.

I AVOID USING FIRST-PERSON REFERENCES OUTSIDE OF QUOTES, PER AP STYLE was able to contact Jamelia Hymon ,the owner of Melanin Poppin t-shirt company in Detroit, to talk about how social media had an impact on her business.

“Before I made my social media accounts for my business, I was not making any money so I was just about to shut down until my mom encouraged me to make an Instagram and Facebook account for publicity,” said Hymon.

Hymon said she began to get lots of followers that immediately became customers and they told their friends and their friends told their friends and now she has a million dollar business.

Besides the fact that social media can be beneficial for someones SOMEONE’S, SINGULAR POSSESSIVE, INSTEAD OF SOMEONES, PLURAL business, it is also a platform for people to find activities in their communities.

Darvohna Weis, a high school student, said that her knowledge about different events and activities in her community is simply because of her city’s Twitter account.

Although there are many benefits to social media there are also many negative things that comes along with it that can make it an unsafe space.

Dorcas Estelle, a teacher and pastor in Detroit, says that she has encountered several teens and young adults that has experienced cyber bullying because they may be different from others.

“I had one student come to me crying because someone that did not like what she was wearing and posted a picture of her outfit on Facebook and it went viral,”said Estelle.

Estelle said that we should watch the things that we post because they can be hurtful to people. She also said that people are more cruel on the internet than in person because on the internet they get to hide behind their phones or other devices.
