JRN 200: A Message From The J-School ...

... as follows, from J-School Chief Lucinda Davenport. (FYI, I worked against Steve Friess in Las Vegas; he's a helluva journo with some great experiences to share; do get to know him, if you have the chance. You'll learn a ton.)

Dear Colleagues,

Three wonderful opportunities are available for students to hear from professionals within the next few weeks.

o Pulitzer Prize winner Adam Goldman
Oct. 23, Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m. in room 145  (flyer attached)
Associated Press investigative reporter Adam Goldman will discuss the legally questionable surveillance program of Muslims and Arabs that cost New York taxpayers millions, invaded the privacy of thousands and stopped zero known terror plots. His investigations resulted in a Pulitzer Prize winning book called Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD's Secret Domestic Spying Program.

o  Pulitzer Prize winner Adam Goldman
Oct. 23, Wednesday, 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in room 145
This follow-up session is intended to be only for journalism students and faculty and is less formal. JRN 200 Instructor Steve Friess will interview Goldman about his career and work and invite students to ask questions.

o  Neal Shine Endowed Journalism Ethics Lecturer 2013-2014 -- Tom Rosenstiel, President of the American Press Institute
Nov. 21, Thursday, 4 p.m. in room 145 (flyer coming soon)
Rosenstiel is president of the American Press Institute and founder of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, which became part of the Pew Research Center in 2006. He and Bill Kovac wrote a book called The Elements of Journalism in 2001, revised in 2007, that has become foundational for journalists and has been translated into more than 20 languages. He recently co-wrote The New Ethics of Journalism: Principles for the 21st Century with Kelly McBride (published in July 2013). He will talk about  a new code of ethics for journalists in the 21st century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Rosenstiel

Thank you to Journalism 200 Instructor Steve Friess for bringing his friend Adam Goldman to MSU.  (Here is an introduction to Steve: http://cas.msu.edu/welcome-2/)

Thank you to Steve Lacy for inviting Tom Rosenstiel. Steve is trading speaking engagements with Tom Rosenstiel (but this was not necessarily part of the agreement!).

Thank you for announcing these speakers to your students, who are interested in all things journalism. They will enjoy hearing from these influential professionals!
