... with some pretty good structure and some pretty typical problems:

Out-Of-Class #1
Summer is often thought as the
time to take a vacation, but for some students summer revolves around work and classes.
Working and taking classes during
the summer is a difficult tasks for students who have been enrolled in classes
all year. Most students like to take a break from classes during the summer so
they have more time to make money and travel with friends and family before the
next semester starts.
Julie Hagopian, an academic and
career advisor at Michigan State University, deals with students everyday and
is often asked questions about taking classes and working at the same time. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “Students should always be cautious when considering accepting
a job on top of being a full-time student. Balancing work and school can
involve a lot of coordination and effective time management to pull off
successfully.” COMMA GOES INSIDE OF

Hagopian has
seen many students succeed with taking classes and working. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “Many students are able to manage and prioritize their
responsibilities effectively. I’ve worked with a student that was able to
manage three internships in one semester, while taking a full set of courses.
She thrived in this environment and needed the challenge to keep her motivated.”

However,
Hagopian has also seen many students struggle with the same task. “On the other
hand, I’ve seen students that have worked over 40 hours a week and
unfortunately let their grades suffer because of their work hours.” COMMA GOES INSIDE OF QUOTE MARKS AHEAD OF

Hagopian
believes that school should come first before work. “We want students to be
successful during their time at MSU and we don’t want work to get in the way of
their degree.” COMMA GOES INSIDE OF

essential for success after graduation and students need to find the time to
fit internships into their undergraduate experience.” COMMA GOES INSIDE OF QUOTE MARKS AHEAD OF ATTRIBUTION LIKE THIS,” Hagopian

While Hagopian
believes school is more important for a student rather than work, she still
believes a student should find a balance for the two. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “It’s great if students can balance both, but if students
need to just focus on school or work one semester that can be an effective
route for them as well.” COMMA GOES

Some students believe that if
you work while taking classes in the summer that it won’t affect your grades.
However, Jonathan Bolger, a pox logistics coordinator at HLS, is currently
enrolled in one class at Broward College and works at HLS this summer. START

PER GRAF Bolger said COMMA GOES HERE
“Working does affect my grades because I’m not willing to give up my hobbies
either, so I have to split the little time I do have after work to do school
work and whatever leisurely activity I decide on that day, whether it is going
to the park, spending time with family, or playing video games. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF If I didn’t have to
work I would have more time for school work and not have to rush through it.”
While Bolger stated SAID, INSTEAD OF STATED that working
affects his grades, he still believes a student should try to manage to do
both. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE
MAIN POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “I do recommend
working while taking classes because it teaches you more responsibility and
plus, who doesn’t love money?” Bolger said.
Josh Johnson, a pox logistics
coordinator at HLS, is currently enrolled in one class at Florida Atlantic
University and works at HLS this summer. Johnson is a hard worker and likes to
be rewarded instantly for his work, which is why he puts work before school. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “I think work tends to
come first to me even though it probably shouldn’t. I have always been an
instant gratification type person so working hard at my job gets me better
rewarded while school is a process for years that doesn’t have instant
rewards.” COMMA

This is Johnson’s first time
working while taking classes and he was surprised when it wasn’t as easy as he
thought it would be. However, he says he won’t drop the class or quit his job. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN
POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “I wouldn’t do anything
differently because I need the source of income; it allows me to pay for school
and my car, both of which are essential to me, as well as always having
spending money when I want something. I have never been a straight A student so
not being one now doesn’t bother me.” COMMA GOES INSIDE OF QUOTE MARKS AHEAD OF ATTRIBUTION

INSTRUCTOR
COMMENTS: NICE WORK OVERALL; ONE IMPORTANT MISSING PERSPECTIVE WAS THAT OF
EMPLOYERS AND TEACHERS OF STUDENT-WORKERS. DO THEY FEEL STUDENTS ARE STRETCHED
TOO THIN, OR NOT? WHAT DO THEY SEE? OTHERWISE, YOU’RE DOING WELL. DO BE SURE TO
HIT THE RETURN KEY MORE OFTEN TO LET KEY POINTS, SUBPOINTS AND SUPPORTING
POINTS PHYSICALLY STAND OUT.
