North Texas Construction
Interstate 35 commuters and
University of North Texas students will continue to have their patience tested
with the construction projects, but construction is planned to end sooner than
later.
Beginning in October of 2013 and
scheduled to finish sometime mid HYPHEN
HERE 2017 the construction on I-35 and
around the UNT campus has added benefits such as adding lanes, but is also
causing significant complications for the divers who currently use the
interstate.
With the recent flooding around North
Texas, driving and traffic have become a major importance and concern for
locals. Road damages and significant closures have caused detour routes to at
times come to a standstill, and traffic to be a nightmare for almost everyone
in North Texas.
THIS WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE FOR A RELATED QUOTE, ILLUSTRATING AND
HUMANIZING THE POINT
With all the flooding, most would
believe that construction on I-35 and the UNT campus would be delayed or hit a
standstill.
That is not the case according to
Kimberly Sims, the public information manager for the 35 I-35, STED 35, PER AP STYLE project. Sims said that although the
flooding has caused work to be limited in some areas, they have been able to
focus on others of the project, while waiting for lake and flooding levels to
go down.
THIS IS A GOOD PLACE FOR A QUOTE FORM SIMS SUPPORTING THE POINT IN THE
PREVIOUS GRAF
From the Texas Department of
Transportation website, WEBSITE HAS A
CAPITAL W, PER AP STYLE whose representatives declined an interview, and
also Sims, we DON’T USE FIRST–PERSON
REFERENCES LIKE WE OUTSIDE OF QUOTES, PER AP STYLE. SAY, SIMS AND THE WEB SITE
OF THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION – WHOSE REPRESENTATIVES DECLINED TO
BE INTERVIEW – SAID … learned that
the construction taking place is to add an additional lane each way, along with
other construction in the area, such as the North Texas Boulevard bridge also
going under a reconstruction project.
Zane Reif, the UNT Senior Director
of the university union, says he believes this project will help the facilities
of North Texas live up to the expectations of the 37,000 students who go there.
THIS IS A GOOD PLACE FOR A QUOTE FROM REIF SAYING WHY HE BELIEVES THAT
Reif says his job and goal are to
manage the project and to work with student requests.
AND HOW IS HE DOING THAT? THIS IS A GOOD PLACE FOR A QUOTE FROM REIS.
SHOW ME HOW HE’S MANAGING/WORKING WITH STUDENTS; DON’T JUST TELL ME THAT HE IS
A current student, Robert McClay, is
a finance major that has lived both on and off-campus during his time at UNT.
McClay said that the construction
never factored into his decision to move onto campus, but said he would go to
campus having to avoid I-35, especially during peak rush hours.
HOW ABOUT A QUOTE FROM MCCLAY HERE ELABORATING ON THAT?
McClay, who is planning to graduate
in 2017, said “the project will not be beneficial to me because I won’t be here
anymore. In the long run I can see it really helping other people and to help
grow the school.”
Adam Gerson, a 2013 graduate,
echoed McClay’s comments on the benefits of the project. Gerson said he thinks
the benefits of the construction project will help to diffuse the bottleneck
created by the increasing population in the area, and for everyone who gets off
work around 3 p.m. having to drive home at the same time.
AGAIN, WE NEED A QUOTE FROM GERSON HERE. SHOW ME WHAT HE HAD TO SAY;
DON’T JUST TELL ME HE SAID SOMETHING
The future benefits of the project
are not without numerous consequences that everyone must face.
McClay said most of the issues he
faced occurred when trying to leave and campus during the peak rush hours,
causing him to avoid using I-35 altogether. START NEW PARAGRAPH HERE; ONLY ONE MAIN POINT OR ONE SUPPORTING POINT OR
ONE QUOTE PER GRAF “Since most people live on or really close to campus it
is not difficult to get to class, but it is really difficult to get off campus,”
McClay said.
Gerson, who currently uses I-35 to
get to work, said when he was attending UNT getting to and from class was not a
real issue, but the construction posed a major issue when he attempted to go to
his job at the time.
AGAIN, GERSON QUOTE HERE. SHOW ME; DON’T JUST TELL ME
Sims says that the I-35 project
team is trying to combat these issues by only having closures between 9 p.m.
and 6 a.m., which are lesser dense times on the Interstate. INTERSTATE IS LOWER CASE WHEN USED WITHOUT
A SPECIFIC INTERSTATE NUMBER, PER AP STYLE
Sims said she strongly encourages
people to follow up with the project on Facebook and to also sign up on the 35 I-35, STED 35, PER AP STYLE project
website WEBSITE HAS A CAPITAL W, PER AP
STYLE. PLUS, WHAT IS THE URL? to receive a newsletter. She believes this
will help to inform the interstate travelers and alleviate some of the issues
drivers face since they will have the most up to date information.
HOW ABOUT A QUOTE FROM SIMS ELABORATING ON THAT?
With significant construction
taking place, the question of if it has affected UNT admissions was investigated.
THIS IS AN EMPTY GRAF THAT REALLY SAYS
NOTHING. DELETE IT AND JUST GET INTO WHAT YOU FOUND.
McClay and Gerson both said that
they believed the construction had little if any impact on admissions, and
noticed little change in their class size.
THIS IS A WEAK TEST OF EFFECTS ON STUDENT BODY SIZE. BETTER TO ASK UNT
FOR DATA TO SEE IF THERE’S BEEN A CHANGE. IF WE ARE TO USE THIS; WE NEED
SUPPORTING QUOTES TO FOLLOW THAT GRAF
Reif was unable to comment on
admission numbers WHY? but said he
takes requests from current students to have the facility live up to their
expectations.
With the current enrollment
seemingly unchanged and the project projected to finish within the next few
years, McClay said UNT looks to be primed to thrive, especially economically,
following completion of the project.

INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS: GREAT JOB OF ORGANIZING INFO HERE, BUT TWO BIG
THINGS WOULD HELP YOU MOVE UP YOUR GRADE IN REWRITE: FIRST, MANY MORE QUOTES!
LET’S ADD HUMAN-SOUNDING VOICES TO THE STORY. LET THE VOICES SHOW ME THEIR
FRUSTRATION OR ANGST OR EXCITEMENT; DON’T JUST TELL ME THEIR FEELINGS. SECOND,
WE COULD USE A NEUTRAL EXPERT LIKE A PROFESSOR IN TRANSPORTATION OR URBAN
AFFAIRS TO PUT THIS IN PERSPECTIVE: HOW TYPICAL ARE THESE ISSUES? WHAT’S USUAL
OR UNUSUAL HERE? WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL PROBLEMS AND CONCERNS AND BENEFITS?
STILL, A VERY NICE FIRST JOB HERE.
