Your Friday 6/12 Homework

A lot to do here over the next few days, folks. First off, please finish reading Chapter 12 (p. 305-330) in Reporting For The Media, 10th Edition this weekend.

Also, please review the new blog posts regarding the CONTROVERSIAL exercise, which will be posted to this blog by no later than 5 p.m. Friday.

Then, once you have read that chapter and reviewed those posts, you will have TWO practice stories to do this weekend. Please write each in a separate Word document and send each in a separate email! Please give yourself 90 minutes to read, write and review each story.

Here is assignment one, slugged ROBBERY:

Ch. 11, Ex. 4, p. 303-4, #1. Slug: ROBBERY. Please write a story based on the provided information. For this story, the store's name is O-Mart. It is located in Haslett. Police officers are with the Meridian Township Police Department. The district attorney is the Ingham County District Attorney. The store clerk attends Lansing Community College. All other spellings and names are correct as presented in the text. Your deadline is 9 a.m. Monday.

And here is assignment two, slugged MURDER:

Ch. 12, Ex. 4, p. 326-7. Slug: MURDER. The location is Detroit. Your deadline is 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Also, please read Chapter 16 (p. 410-440) in Reporting For The Media, 10th Edition, by Tuesday morning.

Also, please review chapters Q through Z in your AP Stylebook by no later than Tuesday morning. I will start enforcing AP Style rules in practice stories as of next week.

Plus, please be sure to read the latest blog posts, posted here. It's important that you do, to make sure that you're on-point with the main points of the readings. The posts also include greater detail and examples of ways to organize the body of a story, so the latest readings are especially important to what we're doing today. Please make sure you're reading the blog on a daily basis, and checking for updates every weekday.

A reminder: virtually everything we do in this class -- including getting assignments -- revolves around the blog. It is YOUR responsibility to keep up with the latest blog postings, and to read each and every one, and act accordingly.

The blog will be updated every weekday, no later than 5 p.m. And if you have problems getting to a computer, the blog is also formatted to be read on your smart phones, using the same URL of http://jrn200isfunblog.blogspot.com/.

Any questions? Call me at 517-432-3009, email me at omars@msu.edu, or stop by my office during regular weekday business hours at 435 E. Grand River Ave. (at the corner of Grand River and Division, next to the SBS bookstore).

Sorry for the busy weekend, but we have a lot to get through this summer. Hope you have a good one, everyone.
