First, before Tuesday please review Chapters A through G in the AP Stylebook. Basically,
skim those chapters and get a sense of the types of terms for which AP
Style has a particular way of listing and presenting information, and
get a feel for which term you may have to look up and execute this
semester.
Next, read the following blog posts regarding fact-checking strategies I'd like you to
weave into EVERY reporting and writing exercise we do in class. Please
consider both the general concepts and specific approaches offered, and
weave a fact-checking plan that works for you into the work we do this
term.
Journalism isn't about writing; it's about getting it right.
What we do isn't simply write stories; we religiously double-check
facts to verify what we write is correct and what we intended to write.
That doesn't happen by accident; rather, by a systemic review of our
work before we send in our stories.
Plus, on Tuesday we will start with writing exercises from the Reporting For The Media text, so please bring your Reporting For The Media textbook to class every day, starting Tuesday! I know it's a big book to tote around, but we'll need it.
And of course, please keep reading the front section of USA Today and all of The State News, Mondays through Thursdays.
